A few more Tritium map reading lights. See last post!
I have for sale a batch of at 42 Brand New Tritium map reading lights / locators manufactured for the military by
Saunders-Roe Developments Ltd in the U.K.
They have a NATO number and were made in Late 2008, so are 'very fresh'
They are about 77mm X 35mm and the tritium disc is about 20mm in diameter.
The light and cap are made of rubber and the attachment ring is rubber coated steel.
Each light comes with a woven nylon lanyard / neck cord.
The rear of the light has the radiation trefoil sign moulded in.
These are ‘Beta lights’ but NOT the 10 year old, out of date, perished army surplus rubbish you often see offered for sale!
I have posted the manufacturers full specification at the end of this post.
The light output is easily enough to read a map with fully night adapted vision.

Re 'beam shots'
It's really hard to do this, at least its hard for me
These are taken in a 95% dark room with a little light coming in around the door and some light from the leds in electrical appliances.
The first one is with the Trit light pointed at a matt white wall and the second is the light laying on a gloss white surface.
I have tried to set the exposure to produce the same 'beam' brightness as I am seeing in real life. The problem is that I had to use a torch to focus the camera and that ruined my dark adapted vision!
It turned out that the exposure settings were spot on to the ones the camera was using on auto with the flash turned off.
I have cropped and resized these photos but other than that it straight out of the camera.
In the second photo the 'beam' appears less bright as the camera was looking into the Trit itself.
I think these photos give a reasonable representation of the light. In pitch black with 20 minute night adapted vision they look a little brighter. YMMV
I would like $69 each for these including PayPal fees and shipping anywhere in the world.
(Discount for 3 or more, please PM)
If you would like one of these lights please post here then send your PayPal for $69 to gjr (at) cavalrybarn (dot ) com
PLEASE PUT ‘TRIT LIGHT’ AND YOUR CPF NAME IN THE PAYPAL SUBJECT LINE
I will keep the list in the 2nd post up to date with payments received and lights shipped.
With regard to safety:
These lights contain a very small amount on tritium gas contained within a borosilicate glass disc.
If the disc were broken and all of the gas deliberately ingested the dose would be about the same as a dental x-ray.
I have tried to break the glass disc in one of these lights by throwing it down hard on concrete and by swinging it by the neck lanyard into a brick wall, both without success.
I am sure you could break the glass if you hit it face on with a metal spike or a hammer but it would be very hard to do so in normal use.
Usual term and conditions apply:
First to post here in this thread ‘I’ll take one’ gets it.
Questions by PM don’t count as place holders.
Price includes shipping anywhere in the world that has a postal service.
Once I have posted the light I can’t be responsible for loss or damage in the post (but I have never lost anything yet)
Thanks for looking.
Manufacturers specification:
NATO Stock Number
X 4/6260-99-965-3582Diameter - 35mm
Length - 77 mm
Weight - 45 grams
Betalight Colour - Green
Betalight Brightness 800 Microlamberts (nominal)
Typical Applications:
Infantry Night Aid:
Ideal for use by mortar or Light Support Weapon crews for reading target weapon charts, fuse or sight graduations and as a paralleling aid.
Navigation Aid:
A valuable aid for night navigation, map or compass reading reference point for night marches on a compass bearing etc,.
A self-illuminated unit with a wide range of uses, the Betalight Torch is compact, robust, has an in-service life of over 10 years, and can illuminate an area of approximately 7"x 7" without affecting night vision.
NO BATTERIES:
The Torch needs no power supply of any sort. Illumination is provided by the Betalight® - a borosilicate glass capsule, internally phosphor-coated, and filled with tritium gas, which activates the phosphor to emit light.
LONG LIFE:
The Torch has an in service life of 10 years with no need for any maintenance and is designed to survive the harshest climate. It conforms to MoD Defence Standard 62-4.
ROBUST and EASY TO USE:
With a ring and cord for easy carrying and handling, the Torch has a tough black rubber housing.
SECURE:
Recessed light source reduces the chance of enemy detection, and a hinged front cover can further shield the light source for maximum security
Some interesting history and information about Saunders - Roe and Betalight:-
'In the 1940s, the English aerospace company Saunders-Roe manufactured flying boats and helicopters; later, it also produced jet aeroplanes. The company was located on the Isle of Wight.
At the time, it was difficult – if not impossible – to supply uninterrupted power in aircraft. This problem was solved by Saunders-Roe by putting an ionising gas (tritium; 3H) in small tubes. Tritium was dicovered in 1934 by Lord Rutherford.
These tubes (‘Betalights’) are made of borosilicate glass, which does not allow radiation to pass; furthermore, the radiation from tritium is so slight that it cannot pass through the human skin. The inside of the tubes is coated with a fluorescent powder, which glows as a result of the ionizing radiation of the tritium gas. Such a tube emits light for 15 years. Betalights were used to illuminate the flight instruments, exit signs and corridors of the aircraft produced by Saunders-Roe.
When Saunders-Roe was acquired by Westland Helicopters (now part of AgustaWestland, producer of the well-known WAH-64 Apache helicopter), the Betalight production was made independent under the name SRBT (Saunders-Roe Betalight Technology). The factory was established in Ontario, Canada, where tritium supplies are readily available. Today betalights are used in self luminaus escape-route signs , under the product name Betalux™, in the first instance especially for the British and American markets eventually expanding its global markets. Betalights are also used to illuminate the corridors and exit signs of a wide range of commercial and military aircrafts.
In the form of a torch, Betalights were part of the personal belongings of all Apollo astronauts. NASA judged the quality of these torches to be so high that no spares were supplied.
In December 2002, the Netherlands saw the implementation of Euratom 96/29, the regulation justifying the use of ionising radiation, of the Netherlands Ministry of VROM (Public Housing, Regional Planning and the Environment). This regulation allows the use of tritium gas (3H) for escape-route signs in buildings, aeroplanes and ships
The Dutch ministery of economics decided on 1/1 – 2005 to give a 44% taxdeduction when purchasing Betalux™ escape signs in there energy saving program.
Since then, Betalight B.V. has taken over the European marketing of this escape-route signing under the name Betalux™.
Our escape-route signs produce enough light to be recognisable at a distance of 40 metres for 15 years. This form of escape-route signing is applied especially where uninterrupted power supplies are problematic, for instance in monuments, churches and castles (where you don't want to or cannot drill holes in the walls) and in explosion-sensitive spaces in refineries and such like.
We also have a defence division, which is active in the supply of Betalight lights for military purposes, for example, spot markers for minefields (showing safe lanes in the dark ), illuminated rifle scopes, illuminated magnifying glasses (so that maps can be read in the dark), etc.
Betalight b.v. is an offical sponsor of Amnesty International ,together with Amnesty , betalux™ escape signs contribute to a safer world'

Re: New batch of 20+ Tritium map reading lights.
I will take 1 - I will PP in 4 or 5 hours (I presume that is acceptable as I am at work right now).
Rereading the post it looks like the "I'll take one" is good to hold one. PP coming in a few hours.
PP Sent - stuck in at work with some equipment down - so I feel "rightoeous" (spelled wrong) sending it from here. I'm the production guy - so I'm no help on the floor looking for the electrical bugaboos that are holding the equipment from starting.
Thanks, Neale

Well that was fast! Professionally packed! Very nice - took it into bathroom (no window) & could see glow on the wall with it close to the wall. No writing on the bathroom wall....
