I found some very inexpensive plastic pipettes (Thanks to ScottW) and I will be including two of them along with each vial of Norland 61.

You do not have to be a member of CPF to order.

Note- When you receive your vial, I would let it sit upright for a few minutes before opening to make sure the viscous liquid drains from the cap. Do not forget to keep the vial out of sunlight. Store in a cool, dark place (though not in the fridge) and it should store for at least a year, though Norland only guarantees until April 6, 09.

Hi all,

Since I bought a new slotted PD drive for my D10 and I need to glue in the tritium, I am thinking of buying some Norland 61 and some syringes (without needles) or other suitable container and offering quantities of 1 ml each for about $3-$4 plus shipping. This is an optical grade adhesive that can be UV cured by direct sunlight and will dry very clear. Please post here if you might be interested. One ml should be more than enough adhesive for at least a few applications. The Norland 61 has a shelf life of ~4-6 months. You can keep using it until it hardens completely.

Update 9-5-08:
I got my slotted piston in and I conservatively estimate that 1 ml is enough for at least 10 trit installations.

The slot is 8mm x 2mm x 3mm, so you need 48 cubic mm to completely fill the slot. 1 ml is 1000 cubic mm, so you actually have enough for closer to 20 applications. If you take into account the volume that the tritium vial itself displaces, you can see that 1 ml is more than enough.

Update 9-9-08:
OK, I got a bottle of Nor61 in. It will self-polymerize over time whether you open it or not, so it definitely has a set shelf life. However, I believe I saw a thread where McGizmo was still using some Nor61 that had expired a year earlier. If you keep it in a cool, dark place, it will extend the lifetime. Note- DO NOT STORE it in a fridge- store it between 5 and 25 °C (40 and 80 °F) and keep it dark.

Update 9-11-08:
I found some plastic vials that will work well and so I am close to getting ready to ship. The vial will be wrapped in a paper towel and sealed in a ziploc baggie and shipped in bubble wrapped envelope. I will post pics this weekend so you can see what you are getting.

Prices will be $Y for 1 ml vial, $YY for 2 x 1 ml vial. If you would like a 1 ml syringe (without the needle) add $YYY. Shipping will be $X CONUS, $XX to HI, AK and P.R. and $XXX International (This might be cheaper. Will depend on final package weight.) I will begin shipping Monday morning, the second bottle should get here soon and I will ship those out on Friday at the latest (I hope).

Here are the pics of the vials. The screw top plastic vials should handle shipping well.

Just in case, I am wrapping them in tissue paper and in a plastic ziplock type bag. If the vial breaks, the tissue should absorb the liquid and the baggie should contain it.

They are then getting shipped in a bubble lined envelope. I maybe being overprotective but you can't be too careful nowadays!

Here is a picture of the 1 ml transfer syringes and of the transfer pipettes.

You can actually cut the bulb off of the transfer pipettes and then use them as a tip on the syringe. I find that it provides much more control over the amount of liquid delivered.

I am however, having a hard time finding some cheap syringes or vials to ship the liquid in. The best I have found is a package of 100 plastic 2 ml vials for $50.00. I also found some 4 ml dropper bottles that are $50 for a pack of 25.

These would work well and they have many other containers that would work. I also Googled plastic syringe and 20 pages came up with that info. The only problem with shipping it in a syringe would be the possibility of it dispensing itself inside the package.

Thanks for the link. That dropper type bottle would be ideal, but all the sizes they list are too large. The container would ideally need to be 1/8 oz = 1 dram = 2ml or smaller.

Those vials would be perfect if they were plastic. I am worried about the glass vials breaking in transit.

And yes, I agree, shipping the syringes distended might make it more awkward, so I am hoping to find adequate sized plastic vials and including the syringes as an option.

OK, I got a bottle of Nor61 in and it has a manufactured date of Aug/6/2008 and an expiration date of Apr/06/2009. It will self-polymerize over time whether you open it or not, so it definitely has a set shelf life. However, I believe I saw a thread where McGizmo was still using some Nor61 that had expired a year earlier. If you keep it in a fridge, or other cool, dark place, it will extend the lifetime.
