Well Tom, now ya gone and done it... ya made me get all warm and fuzzy and misty eyed... ... and very proud and honored to know such great people in this world as you...
My dear ol' Dad flew his last mission last May. It was a gorgeous day. Low 70s, a few cotton-ball clouds. It was a great day to fly.
He grew up as a coal miner's son, worked a small family owned coal mine near New Columbus, Ohio as a kid and a teenager. He went to flight school and became a command pilot serving in WWII, Korea and Nam.
Last spring, siblings that had not seen each other in years buried him in a glade-bound cemetery overseen by the rolling hills of his childhood in central Ohio. An honor guard from Write-Patterson performed the flag folding ceremony. While watching this we all became filled with a feeling of humility, reverence and power. It was so slow, precise, caring, dedicated and honorable.
A bit of a breeze blustered up and blew down one of the flower arrangements. From behind us, my brothers, my sister and I heard a mild gasp from the many attendees and then one of our newly acquainted aunts said quietly, "Wind beneath his wings". It was a gorgeous day. It was a great day to fly.
I'm so pleased to hear what course you have charted for this very important flag.
As I read your post the hair stood up on the back of my neck. I am especially pleased you won this auction.
Thanks to you, Sasha, Greengoose and the rest of his buddies in The Hellfire Squadron.

Great reason to win, SilverFox.
All too often those deserving don't get their own flags until they're folded for presentation to the widow. I'm very glad to hear of someone getting one while they can enjoy it.
And another TY to Sasha (for kicking back half to OE) - now she's passing out warm & fuzzies as well as getting them.
Tom, WOW - I salute you! I certainly respect you and your plans for this SPECIAL Flag! This Flag represents so much that has happened not only in Iraq, but throughout our Country's history. It is a priceless heirloom! (And to have come directly from one of the Warrior's involved in Freedom's cause...I'm really without words!)
I've got an American Flag, folded in a display case - presented to me upon retirement from 21 years in the USAF. It means so much to me. Not only does it represent 21 years of my life in service to my Country, we of course know what else it represents, along with those who have carried it, fought & died for it, our Flag has such a history!
Someday I'll get another one, when they present it to my family at my funeral. I've got two boys and each will get one of these.
The certificate is filled in with Silver Fox's Son's name. The certificate and flag will be escorted via ARMORED car with overhead blackhawk helicopters... (shaking my head back to reality ) In reality it will be sent overnight UPS to SilverFox tomorrow.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the auction. A very BIG thank you to Silver Fox for the winning bid!!! I couldnt have thought of a better way to use the flag than what you are going to do for your son. You son is lucky to have such a caring dad as yourself.
