Lightbulb WTB: HDS Rotary and other calibrated regulated lights

    All,

I'm looking for multiple calibrated lights. Chief among them will be a HDS Rotary (flush button and either color bezel) as this falls exactly in the middle of the 400 range of my light meter.

As for the other lights, it should output between 400 - 4000 lumens and has been calibrated in an IS before. However, the following conditons MUST be met:
    • seller is able to provide proof of calibration either through an existing CPF thread or have a long standing member vouch for the numbers
    • calibration has occured within the past year
    • the light runs in near perfect regulation (preferably on 18650's)

Alternatively, I'm in need of output testing services for a few of my lights as I'd like to fine tune my PVC LMD and eventually home-made IS. If you're around the tri-state region (NY/NJ/PA/CT) and are able to provide said service, please contact me ASAP.

    Thx!,
    Tim

Thx! I actually tested one at PF18 and it came out dead on at 122lms (then again, like I really need an excuse to purchase another light)

Are they known to be calibrated from the factory? Sorry, just not that familiar with their lights.

EDIT: Was just on their site and they do calibrate their lights before shipping. Ok, guess I'll have to pick one up!

Still looking for testing services though.

    Cheers,
    Tim

I had a HDS 140 that (iirc) tested to be 140.2 lm.

In calibration, we tend to need data points that at least include the expected range of measurements.

For example, the readings at 120 or 140 L might be good, but the reading at 3,300 L might not.

That would mean you'd also want some calibration sources in the mid and upper ranges.

Yup precisely why I want to test a bunch of my lights or acquire one of each for the 400 and 4K range on my light meter.

    Thx!,

You should also use calibration lights from small to large. I.E., you will notice a difference from a small bezel light like a 4sevens Preon Revo or Olight i3 to a Maglite sized light, and on up from there. It's really a best fit kind of thing. We can get close to lab sphere accuracy, but not exactly, and not 100% of the time. You didn't specify in your first post, but I'm assuming that you want to find the lumen value of your lights via a lab sphere, right? Or purchase lights that have been measured in a lab sphere? Not homemade sphere? I used a few different lights with known lumen output to calibrate my sphere (they were measured in a real lab sphere). A couple of them I own, and a couple were borrowed from an individual who no longer has those lights. Unfortunately I'm not interested in selling mine, as I need them, and they are too valuable to me to risk them getting lost in the mail. The last time I priced having a light tested for lumen output, etc. in a professional lab setting it was well over $250.00 for each light (I'm assuming each mode if the light has three different modes, so $250 x 3) because the place I looked into wouldn't just give you otf lumens, but rather the whole works. Lux, runtime, etc., etc.

Also, I've noticed that this seems more important for tubes or boxes and not so much for sphere's. Like you stated in the other thread, a sphere should homogenize the measured light better than a tube or box. Not saying a tube or box won't work, but it seems like there's a reason why an integrating sphere is a sphere. Yeah it takes a little work, and you've got to have a baffle, and depending on how large you want the opening in the sphere to be, it may initially cost more than a box or tube, but it is the shape that's used in professional settings (or at least what I've seen). I'm not knocking you guys for not using a sphere, because we're all having fun and learning new things, but it just makes sense (to me, at least) to go with the shape that's used to professionally measure lumens if you're after accuracy. Just fyi, a 16" styrofoam sphere can be purchased for roughly the same amount as the pvc was to make this tube, excluding shipping. $35.60+ $10-15 shipping. Not sure if we can post a direct link or not here, so if anyone is interested in a direct link to one of these pm me and I'll send it to you.

Thx Ti-force, I really apperciate all the useful feedback you've provided! As a FYI I've got a sphere incoming but regardless I will still need calibrated lights in order to get it calibrated.

All, I've updated the requirements in my OP. I'm chiefly looking for an HDS Rotary but again, please see OP for details and PM me if you have something that fits the requirements or are able to provide output testing services.

    Cheers,
    Tim
