How is the spot/flood function achieved? Is it a solenoid that moves the bulb, or a dual lamp setup?

    What is the wattage/color/bulb base?

Is the charger built in to the body like the Costco/HF lights, or seperate?

    Hi Fritz,

Just a heads up that having two sales threads, one here and one on CPF for the same item is against the rules.

Good luck with the modding and selling!

Yep, and the other one just got deleted.

I'm interested, and have a few questions:

Shipping cost to Australia ? I've found USPS is usually significantly cheaper than the courier companies (unless you want it in a hurry).

What are the dimensions ? (overall length and diameter, weight)

Ah, what the hell - I'll take it ! Please email the total amount (including shipping to Oz) and your paypal address to me: greg[at]gc[dot]id[dot]au and I'll send you the money soon (but not tonight - it is 1:40am here and I'm about to go bye-byes).

I'll be able to do the Paul Hogan (Crocodile Hunter movie) cliche: "You call that a light ? That's not a light, THIS is a light !" It's about time I came up with something new to impress my non-flashaholic friends next time we are camping - the last light they liked was my Dereelight DBS aspheric with an XR-E.

At that price you should sell alot of these! Should be a real throw monster. Tell us about the reflector.

Any plans for doing a 75-100w version?

well as a matter of fact i am! but as a standard, i'm only making the 55w in stock, the 75w is by custom orders only. i've looked into the 100w version, and the only issue i've ran into with those, is ballast size, i don't have any hard dimensions on them, but i don't believe they will fit in the case as is... unless i pull the SLA and install a smaller Lipo and mod the insides to hold both Batt and Ballast, but i believe it can be done, would require a slightly different cooling approach as the standard has, but all in all, i can do it.
as far as reflector goes, what would you like to know? it's alum coated steel, nothing fancy. i'm try'n to make these HIDs so that the average light guy can afford a good, quality, functioning light at a price that doesn't break the bank. if you'd like to see the build thread, it's on CPF. and yes, it throws Very nicely, especially for the price. i'm also building a cheaper 35w version as well, and if anyone would like these in special ordered heat colors, by all means let me know! 3000k (yellow) all the way up too 12000K (purple) are available, as well as some specialized colors (green, red, ect.)

I like what you're up to FRITZ. This should give some folks a good opportunity to delve into the wonderful world of HIDs without breaking the bank

Oh, I was just wondering about how wide and deep the reflector is. Looks pretty big to me but it's hard to tell in pics sometimes.

yes, i am proud to present an affordable, high performance HID multi-function light to the masses. i think its long over due. i believe not just the elite light addicts (such as us) should have access to such great lighting technology.

as far as dimensions go, the reflector is 226mm x 64.8mm.
it is a tad on the larger size, but with the SLA in the back, and the weight of the head, it's Very nicely balanced while holding by handle and sits very level with the carrying strap.
(tho my future Lipo mod will throw that off by quite a bit so some adjustment may be needed )

    Very cool HID for sure! Couple of questions;

    1) can you take a pic with say a 2D maglight for comparison? Or maybe in hand as well?
    2) I'd like to replace my recently sold BarnBurner with another HID. This looks like a reasonable replacement given the user friendly price tag . What would it cost to do a 75watt version?
And with LiPo batteries or LiIon batteries? Im no clear what your current light runs for batteries.
    3) Where is the switch to adjust the beam at? I can't see it in the pics.
    4) The body looks to be plastic. What is the lens made of? Can this hold up to he heat at a constant runtime?
    5) Do you warranty these for any length of time?
    5) HOW SOON CAN I GET ONE!

    Thanks,
    Dan

And with LiPo batteries or LiIon batteries? Im no clear what your current light runs for batteries. Stock is a 12v 7Ah SLA. Protected Lipo Upgrade is 14Ah and boosts runtime from 1hr to +3hrs. Lipo option with charger is $150
    3) Where is the switch to adjust the beam at? I can't see it in the pics. There are 2 switches on the side, the top switch is the Lamp Power switch, the lower switch is the Flood/Spot switch
    4) The body looks to be plastic. What is the lens made of? Can this hold up to he heat at a constant runtime? Polycarb body with Alum coated Steel reflector, tempered glass lens, it has been powered for over 1 hour with 130w Halogen with no heat issue, and as endured 4 hours run time with HID and FAR LESS HEAT!
    5) Do you warranty these for any length of time?1 year limited warranty on parts/labor.
    5) HOW SOON CAN I GET ONE! well that would depend on where you live! if you'd like a rushed order (this would be a custom made light) i can order the parts on expdited delivery and charge accordingly, once parts have arrives, give me one day to assemble and test, another to pack and ship. after that, it will be in your hands as fast as you would like (want to spend on that is) lol

    Thanks,
    Dan
Dan, i hope i have answered all your questions to your satisfaction. if you have any others, please do not hesitate to ask! and thank you for looking.

    Thanks For the info Charles.

So I read your build thread over on CPF.

Can you fit that LiPo AND charger into the body of the light?

Will I be able to charge the battery without removing it from the light?

Why not just use more common LiIon batteries? I plead ignorance here

Anyway you could get a comparison beamshot of the 50w and 75w setup? If not no worries.

Longshot here, but how would you compare this beam to say... Other more commercial HID's like the BarnBurner or Maxabeam. Granted this is a much less expensive setup.

    That's all for now

Dan, you don't want to compare this (or much else for that matter) to the beam style of the Maxabeam. It is a PINPOINT of supreme intensity. Probably not what you're after. It is the aspherical lens of the spotlight world!

I'm betting the Hand-Sun is very much between, but far more towards the Barn Burner style than the Maxabeam style.

Can you fit that LiPo AND charger into the body of the light? It's actually a Lipo Pack with built in balance controls, and an external "dumb charger" like most common "wall wart" chargers.

Will I be able to charge the battery without removing it from the light?Yes

Why not just use more common LiIon batteries? I plead ignorance here the packs i've chosen are safe, affordable, light, and fit in the available space within the light, thats why i've chosen them.

Anyway you could get a comparison beamshot of the 50w and 75w setup? If not no worries. since i build the 75w to custom order, i do not have any comparison shots as of yet.

Longshot here, but how would you compare this beam to say... Other more commercial HID's like the BarnBurner or Maxabeam. Granted this is a much less expensive setup.
well, i have no exp with a barn burner, nor have i looked up the spec's on one, but from what i have seen, it's an older gen lamp, i'd like to think this light i've built out preforms it nicely.... as far as comparing it to a Short Arc Xenon like the Maxabeam, ... well there is no comparison, Maxabeam and other Short Arc spotlights are in a class of their own, Far smaller point source for the light, making them Throw Monsters! however, i tempted this light to have the sameish features as the Maxabeam, I.E. Good throw, great color, hand comfort and Flood/Spot at the flick of a switch. i'd be JAZZED if the people that do get the chance to use my light deemed it "the poor mans Maxabeam" since i also wanted to make a light that most people could afford.

    That's all for now
    Dan
Again Dan, i hope i've answered all your questions.
