I think geocachers need good lights, so I think that few of them may have registered themselves to cpf/ cpfmarketplace

I've done a bit of geocaching... it's a lot of fun and a great way to get out and see new places! I've discovered parks and areas of town I never knew about! I also find it amazing how there are some geocaches hidden at locations that I pass on a daily basis. I never would have even thought about it! Makes you realize how much we blindly pass by without even noticing each day!!

With GPS devices so common on smartphones these days, geocaching is much more accessible, too!

Oh, and I agree: good lights make it all the more fun!!

I like to geocache. I wish I had more time to do it. Looking forward to the snow melting as it is easier to cache without it.

I occasionally geocache, but my wife is an avid cacher. I set her up with some 4Sevens lights And youre right about caches being everywhere. Know that ive been e posed to it, ive found there are 5 caches that I pass daily that are within 100 feet of me. Who knew

Anyone use c:geo on their Android device for geocaching? I heard the "official" geocaching app (the Groundspeak one) is...err...pretty bad in many ways.

I found that I can use c:geo to get however many caches I want near me and save them for offline use. Pretty handy and the resolution on my tablet is much, much better than the resolution I bought from Digital Globe for my GPS receiver.

I have an iPhone, so I haven't tried the Android app. The official Groundspeak app on the iPhone is pretty good. Never had any problems with it, so I haven't looked elsewhere for a replacement. My son has an Android, so I'll have his grab the c:geo app so I can give it a try.

I'll second the official Groundspeak app on iOS. MotionX-GPS as a standalone GPS app is pretty sweet, too.

Bah...I already paid them for a "premium membership" -- not really keen on giving them another $10 for their android app...

I'll stick with c:geo. When I read the reviews for c:geo, a lot of people said the live maps don't work anymore. I guess the developers had it pointing to some resource at geocaching.com and then geocaching.com did something so they cannot access that resource anymore. So now, their "live maps" don't work anymore...but I found I can just get the caches close to my location and save them for later. That works great. Oh well...

I picked up a Magellan Explorist 400 on ebay a couple years ago, new, for a good price. It has served me very well for the purpose of geocaching. Never used my iPhone for such things before...don't have to pay a membership charge on my GPS.

MotionX-GPS is a very nice GPS app. I use that often, along with their MotionX-Drive app for in-car voice guidance. I prefer the MotionX-Drive over the built in navigation system in my Audi or Acura. It just works better, is more up to date, and makes better routing decisions. Both excellent apps.

I already had the iPhone, and the membership charge was far cheaper than a Magellan. Using it side by side with a couple other GPS units, I found it worked equally as well and very accurate. Having all the other apps (weather, google maps, 3G internet, etc) also come in very handy.

This is the app I use. It works okay. I have a lot of trouble finding the small (nano) caches. So much so that I skip them. I don't know if using a better app will help. For me the appeal is going into the woods. I love the sounds and stuff I see. Late fall is bad though. For some reason all the ticks come out. Not to bad for me, but the dog gets covered.

Me and my girlfriend go geocaching every few weeks. We definitely prefer it at night, it's more interesting, and it lets me play with flashlights! Plus less people to look at you oddly lol.

I think you would look more out of place. Especially in more rural areas. Well now that I think about it, walking around in a parking lot at night might seem odd too.

Should try the night geocache there aren't as many as regular ones. You can only do these at night because the trail is marked with reflectors which you can only see with your flashlight at night. Super fun!

I went night geocaching with a friend once and ended up getting a jerk admonished by the police. We were in a public park well before the park's curfew and this jerk waddled out and confronted us. Had the police there in about five minutes...(guy didn't like my Surefire M3 shining in his face, but the police officer seemed to like my flashlight very well...)

I wouldn't recommend anyone doing that, but...we really didn't have a choice...we were minding our own business and this jerk decided to take it upon himself to try to control our behavior. Since we weren't doing anything wrong, I didn't really appreciate that.

To the OP: I did geocache some years ago, but due to lack of time I've had to stop. There are more things in life that I like to do like sporting (race biking, soccer) going to museums, raising my children... But since you are from Finland let me tell you that I found two, no three caches there, all found on the island of Aland. Didn't have kids back then

I've heard this is fun to do. I'm assuming a simple google search can bring up location sites and more information? Or is there a really good website that is the best for getting started?
