Primaries have a nominal or average voltage of 3v, where Li-ion (LiCo cells) have a nominal voltage of 3.7v usually.

No those will not work. They are li-socl2 cells, designed for very very low currents like <10mA. They are very high energy density and have a long shelf life, and are designed for smoke detectors, alarm systems and other similar devices that draw a low amount of power but need a long reliable service life.

For anyone who's curious, I bought one of these lights modded by Vinhguyen here- on one 14500 IMR, this light is nothing short of spectacular! All he did was change the emitter and driver to a U2 and up the amps a bit. Thus configured, its hits well over 500 OTF lumens. These lights are VERY similar to what I have- GET ONE, you will NOT be disappointed!!

Is the Cree xt-e in the works, because that should have the throw potential of the xp-e with the output of the xp-g, right?

XT-E is slightly more efficient than the XM-L at low dive currents <500mA, but the XM-L does better at higher currents. I have a modded E03 with Blue XT-E installed, but if I can get a white XT-E on MPCB maybe I'll try it. I hear the beam of the XT-E is a little funky.

Even if the reflector needs heavier stippling [to compensate for the 'funkiness'], the much smaller size of the xt-e relative to the xm-l should bring back the throw.
I feel the like there is a pendulum swinging back/forth, and now it is time to swing back to throw.

Maybe different anodization colors too.

Has anyone had any issues with the light not always turning on? About 50% of the time I have to knock the light after clicking to get the light to come on. Haven't abused it by any means. No submersion, no hard hits, it's only been on my key chain since I bought it. Never mounted to a weapon or anything like that.

Maybe try replacing the clicky switch (it came with a spare). If you still have problems after that send me an email or PM, thanks.

Does this work with protected cells or are they too long? Tried a protected cell in another flashlight and the screw down to contact head mechanism would not function with the longer cell.

I've used protected Trustfire 14500's in these just fine.

Most protected cells should work fine, like AW's for example. Some of the longer 52-53mm ones may be a tight fit or not fit. But if its under 52mm long it should be no problem.
