Red face 4Sevens brand LiIon charger - V2 fixed version now Shipping

    **EDIT**
More info on pending recall in post #74 and on.
    ** End Edit**

    Original post:
The tricky folks at 4sevens snuck this one by us. How long has 4Sevens had their own brand of LiIon Charger? Anybody test one out?

Looks to be using the proper algorithm and about half the price of a Pila.
Two voltage settings and two charge currents.

Finally a decent cradle charger at a decent price. Thanks 4Sevens!

Brand new offering as of today.

I like the fact it will charge at 3.6v!
    Plus different input sources.

Yes this is the part I need to be patient and not just jump on the S12 only to find out a light better suited for me is out within the next few days, been there done that. Anyway the charger looks good I'm sure our group of battery/charger experts will inspect it fully. I do like the USB hook up and 3.6 is also good for battery storage IIRC.

Yes. Most 10440 are around 300mAh, so .5A (or 500mA, not .500mA) would be greater than 1C. Typically less than 1C is recommended for Li-Ion longevity. I wouldn't charge anything smaller than a 750mAh 14500 or RCR123 at .5A current.

My question is whether a USB cable can actually supply 1A of current?

  10. #10

Default Re: 4Sevens brand LiIon charger

It looks like it says "also" in reference to the usb charging, meaning it can probably plug into the wall for the 1a. To answer your question, a wal wort may or powered usb hub may give 1a of current, usb3 does, but if a port doesn't, it'll probably give around 500ma, and only run on 500ma. My question would be how would we know if it isn't functioning at 1a?

    I'm going to buy one!

Looking forward to someone verifying true charge termination... Otherwise, looks like a great product, though I agree they should take 10440 off their "supported" list, or consider adding a 200ma current selector

USB provides 500mA to 900mA @5V. This charger has a 500mA input current when on the USB connection.

    Just asked 47s now:
500mA will almost certainly shorten the life of the 10440 (don't do it)

As for charging unprotected cells: they are not recommended and (if anything should go wrong) the customer service doesn't support it.

This is great! There's always been a demand for something like this. A true cc/cv charger that is not priced as expensive as the pila IBC. Hopefully this will mean more people will be able to charge li-ions safely! Its more versatile than the IBC with selectable current (500/1000ma) and voltage (3.6/4.2V). On the other hand the Pila IBC has two bays, and there is button that resets the charging for near-fully-charged li-ions.

Seems like a lot of accessories are included, if this charger terminates properly and charges properly, its a great price! Good job 4sevens team!

Why does it only charge "protected" batteries???

    What chemistries does it charge???

You can charge unprotected cells but at your own risk. 4sevens does not support the use of anything besides protected cells because they consider them dangerous.

I believe they should charge the regular li-ions, IMR and LiFePo

Use 4.2 setting for standard LiCo and LiMn cells. If the cell has less than 1400mAh capacity I would use the .5 amp setting. If it's 1400mAh or more I would be comfortable using the 1 amp setting.

I'm quite curious to see if the 3.6v setting can be used for LiFePO4 cells. If it does, that would open up a lot of opportunities for me.

I just received my S12 and also need to know what settings to use on the charger. I don't want any mishaps. Also does anyone know what other rechargeable batteries can be used in the charger with their settings? There was no paperwork provided with that info with my order. Many thanks.

Although I have experience with many battery types and many chargers, i'm also a little surprised there isn't any sort of instruction sheet with this charger.

Thinking Re: 4Sevens brand LiIon charger

The charger does indeed look very promising. However, one guestion to 4Sevens (and to 4Sevens only):

Is there any REAL (i.e. technical) reason why it should not be used with unprotected cells? Other than 4Sevens being just cautious and not too interested in being a big name in charger business.

I have been thinking about replacing my current charger (WF-139) with Pila or a more versatile (and even more expensive) hobby charger. This could be the choice. I only use high quality protected cells (AW). The WF-139 is not considered to be a good charger, but mine has worked flawlessly for 2+ years now. I would not replace it with anything I couldn't trust, and absolutely not with anything that requires a protection circuit for a backup. I am slightly paranoid with lithiums and the description (compatible only with protected cells) really sounds bad.
