I think improvements are good. My concern isn't with down time; it's with the lack of notification that occurred prior to previous down times.

    Hello Sasha,

    Go for it...

If everything goes fine, we will be singing praises for your efforts...

If things get screwed up, that will give us something to complain about...

I like the idea of integration. A few days downtime in the long run is no problem, in my view. Good luck!

I agree if it's easier to fix by shutting it down for a few days and will make things better, I'd say go for it!

Good luck with what ever choice you make, I know it can't be easy.

Sasha, on my behalf please do whatever you need to make it work well for you, the mods and the members. If it takes a week, so be it. I am sure none of us will die from CPF withdrawal. I think everyone would be happy to see the end of the 'server busy' message.

ps If anyone does have a medical condition which needs constant CPF fixes, maybe they should post now

No biggie we can handle a few days without CPF. We're all survivalists, besides maybe we'll save a few bucks anyways.

If it means several days downtime, I think it would be worth it.

If it's a gargantuous task, then forget about it.

    Go for it!

Should we go and copy our last days worth of posts to our puters so we can put them back?

I don't think some downtime would be a big deal if it made CPF run better. Sounds good.

Agreed on doing the whole shebang... full integration, no lost posts, upgrade, etc. It'll be a tough wait, but a worthwhile one.

Triple good luck to ya', Sasha! BTW, what will the upgrade entail, VB only, or server as well?

Shut it down for as long as it takes to get everything right. No point on wasting your time on a cobble job that you'll have to revisit over and over again. (What's that Murphy's Law variant, You never have time to do it right the first time but you always have time to do it over. Maybe we could just skip that second part. )

    Good luck.

    Sasha,

I really don't mind losing any post count as long as the forum runs stronger, faster and easier to navigate.

To me the post count is nothing but an indicator of how much time we've wasted online instead of out playing with our kids or the torches when it's dark. Holly Bat dooo dooo I've got 1850 posts... I've got to go outside and light up the sky... I've wasted too much time already..

again to emphasis... do whatever it takes sasha

Just think, if it goes down for a couple days, it'll be like a BIG family reunion. Everyone will be looking to see whats new and what's for sale. We'll have what, 2 or 3 days of B/S/T to catch up on. The race will be on to see who gets the best deals.

Sasha, thanks for your efforts, and especially for the updates. I think we all appreciate knowing the latest on the operation-in-progress.

Integration + no lost posts sounds like the way to go.

As for the downtime, to echo another CPFer's comments, you're liable to get some thank you cards from our wives.

A day or two of downtime would be worth it to get the two completely integrated. Do what's easiest for you, don't kill yourself rushing it. Most of the time it is better to bring everything down, set it straight and bring it back up slowly when doing a big server upgrade. We will survive a couple days, or a week even! :O
