ammo is about the only thing gear related that i cant just take from the armory, so where do you guys buy cheap ammo(I know cheap ammo means I clean my gun more, big deal).

I usually buy mine in bulk at Sportsmanguide.com

well, I know guys that take a couple boxes or so and pocket them whenever we head in to get range ammo(they collect the shells and weigh them, so if we sign out for this many boxes, but come up a few lbs short in casings...then we have a problem), but Im not cool with that, this is for sport not training, the cheapest place i could find was local, but I'll try dicks or some other sporting place to see if they let me use coupons or anything on ammo.

Local gun shows generally have decent (not great) deals. www.ammoman.com also but it's been a while since I bought from them--don't know if they have good deals anymore. I generally reload and will continue to do so with ammo prices so high these days.

With ammo being up 50-70% in the past year, the concept of "cheap ammo" may be gone, at least for the moment.

I always have good luck at Walmart for my 9mm and 40's. I usually buy the winchester white box or blazers if the others are out.

Very true. Ide go to your local wall-mart if they stock it. Ive found they have some of the best prices if you dont want to order offline.

Forgot to mention: Used to buy most of my ammo at Wal-Mart as prices are very competitive, but lately they just can't seem to keep it in stock. If you are lucky enough to find what you're looking for in stock, our local Wal-Marts (south Florida) are limiting us to one box of a given caliber per visit. I can't say I've ever seen them do that before.
Cheers,

For shotgun ammo, two good sources are:

Rogers Sporting Goods (http://store.rogerssportinggoods.com/servlet/StoreFront)

Able Ammo (http://www.ableammo.com/)

My local walmart is always out of stock, and the online ammo dealers rarely have a "good" deal anymore, especially when you add shipping. I've seen some good deals at the local Cabelas store right before Christmas on 9x19 and .223 budget ammo. Online usually does not offer the same sales that you occasionally come across in the actual store. I have not purchased ammo for about 2 years, aside from the recent 9x19 buy from Cabelas right before Christmas.

If you like to shoot a lot and stick to just a few calibers, the way to go is just to have a ammo cash $ reserve and wait. I've come across a guy getting out of .45ACP (lawyer, seemingly wealthy) and he unloaded 2.5 cases of AE ball to me at a really, really sweet price... Back when 5.45 was .11c / rd shipped, I stocked up... people before me stocked up on the old Chicom 7.62x39 & .223, or various milsurp 7.62.. hirt, sa, port. etc. for a deal price on good ammo... So again, that's the key.. have cash on standby and be patient. When you finally stumble into a great deal, buy a load of it. It should always continue to appreciate in value, so even if you don't shoot it all you can still easily liquidate it, probably with a profit.

My Walmart used to have good deals on 9x19, but it's not worth it anymore because they limit one box per customer.:thumbsdow

That and it's hardly ever in stock! Last time I found some at my local Wal-mart, they only had five boxes of 9x19. I bought two and another guy was going to buy one, but decided to buy two.

Too right! My Walmart has a million boxes of .308 but a box of .22 rimfires is too much to ask for? Come on! Seriously, the last time I saw a box of NORMAL .22 rimfires was in January. I don't want ratshot, or CCI minimags. I just want to plink with my 10/22 using good 'ol .22 rimfire!!!

Sorry about the rant...:mecry:

I've been seeing more ammunition at the local Walmart lately. 9mm and .223 seems pretty readily available. The handgun calibers are a pretty good deal there.

For most of my rifle ammunition I go to http://palmettostatearmory.com/. They have great service and great prices on 5.56 and .223.

Nowadays, I just reload though.

It's luck of the draw...
Walmart seems to have more and more 9x19, 40s&w, and .45. Recently, I've seen 250 rnd bulk packs of all. However, they sell out very quickly. Less popular .38 and 357 mag seem to stay around a little longer, but they put only maybe 4 boxes on the shelves at once.
Cabela's is building their inventory back up too.
Don't forget the local shops though! They tend to have a better stock, and/or better suppliers, and buying from them is good for the local economy.

Monarch ammo is Academy's brand ans is made somewhere in the ols soviet block. It comes in either brass casing or stell. I only buy the brass and have not had a malfuntion with it yet. I've probably shot 300-400 rounds of 5.56/223 and around 500 rounds each of their .380 and .38 special. Academy is starting to always have this in stock over the past month or so and the AR-15 ammo is on special right now for $5.99 a box, this price is unbeatable considering it is the same quality as the Remington and Winchester stuff. Both my Stag and my brothers Bushmaster seem to really like Monarch brass.

Academy used to be decent with their rifle ammo. Our walmarts in Oklahoma are usually pretty good, but limited to six boxes of pistol ammo if they have them in stock. Usually sell out really fast.

Last time I priced it out the factory ammo about the same the calibers I use (start up cost + time + materials). Regardless, I have been saving brass. Figure that at some pint it will be cost effective for me.
But currently it is

+1 on Academy

You'll only find Academy Sports in the Southeastern states of America though...

They have a house brand "Monarch" that is made either by Prvi Partizan (serbia) or Barnaul (russia) depending on if you buy brass or steel.
