I figured we could use another post in here, so I`m happy to tell everyone that I`m (slowly) posting from my Nintendo DS. The DS Browser finally has been released in North America! I have a new toy to play with and figure out. For around $30 it`s not a bad deal IMO; slow and limited in some things, but I think with more playtime I`ll figure out how to do things better, quicker, etc. Anyway, anyone else have one yet? As I learn tips and tricks I`ll post here if it seems anyone else is interested. If not... what`s your newest toy?

MY new toy(s) is a cheap 27 led headlamp from DX. I'm going to put it through the motions camping this weekend. I'll probably bring my RR .5w too as backup.
I'm hoping by tomorrow I'll get my other DX toy, the 30mw green laser. I really want that guy in time for camping!
Also got a doorbell from DX, funny how such a simple thing serves a gret purpose in an apartment. I'd never hear a door knock in my room with music or the AC on.

Well thats certainly an interesting device from DX. While the legality of using the device is definitely not at all a question I am the type of person who likes having such things for as I put it, "just in case..." Hope it makes it thru customs.

Well, I know many of us already browse on portable devices such as PDAs and cel phones, but I am having a good time browsing on my DS anyway. It gives a good isea of the abilities as well as the limitations of the hardware for one. BUt also its just fun browsing on a game boy while sitting on the "throne" :sssh:.

Thus far it does not appear to support Flash, .pdf, audio streams, nor any of the video I have so far encountered. When browsing normal sites like CPF it is slow going, but some sites have reduced graphics versions of their webpages, mobile versions etc which generally make it speed up to almost the normal that I"m used to on my desktop. So far I haven't had any websites that the opera software was not compatable with, though gmail did suggest I get a "supported" browser :'(

Another new "toy" I've been (carefully) using is a Benchmade Infidel. I've had it for about a month now and I must say everything appears solid. It is definitely easier to deploy and retract while wearing a glove, but other than the stiff switch... which in this case I much prefer so it doesn't go off in my pocket... I have no immediate gripes. I just wish I could actually take it out of my residence in my pocket. Oh well. I should have some new flashlight toys arriving thru June to keep things jucy.

Its fun to buy stuff from DX, especially stuff you know the kids are gonna bust up and destroy anyhow. :poof:

How does one get the DS browser?

Myself I walked into Target, went back to the DS game display pointed thru the glass and grunted at the guy wearing a red shirt :)

The hardware should be available in most stores now. There's a DS card containing the Opera browser software and a GBA slot card that has some memory so you can store bookmarks and such in the package. Was just over $30. You need some sort of wifi network. My old Linksys router does fine.

Yea that would be a target employee ;)

I've been having quite a bit of luck pulling out my DS in various places and finding completely open wifi connections. I only ever go as far as checking for wep keys, passwords and a google start page, but it does surprise me how many people out there STILL leave the door wide open so to speak.

I've found that the web browser gets pretty sticky when dealing with large pictures or a lot of pictures. Not a problem if you're not there to look at the pictures as it has a disable images feature. But if you're trying to look at pictures, well best not to buy a DS browser for that.

But after getting used to typing with the stylus for a couple days, email and forums are getting easier to manage. I'm hoping now that Nintendo has released an authorized (as opposed to the homebrew stuff) browser they follow up with a PDA-like program w/ calculator, etc.
And there is moonshell on homebrew, which I'm quite tempted to try out (have to buy some hardware) to see how well my DS can handle being a media player. Anyone tried dsorganize, moonshell etc?

Well the 30mw laser was a complete success at camping. We had a ball with it in the middle of the woods, looking at around the campfire and just letting it shine out into the blackness.
Also got a good responce from the girlfriend last night at her farm, she was very impressed.

I saw the DS Browser at GameStop and picked up a copy. It seems like it'll come in handy because I always seem to need to check something online when I'm out and about, and since I don't carry my PDA and my phone's browser is incredibly crippled, the DS Browser'll work great. I usually carry my DS in my bag... and my bag is usually with me all the time. It's a bit slow, which kinda disappointed me given Opera's legendary status as being really fast, but otherwise it is pretty cool.

Ah yes, my green laser has never failed to disappoint around the campfire. I generally pack it when I know I'll be around people other than my immediate family, as I like to point out stars, planets, nebulae, other galaxies, etc.
Mind you my laser is a >5mW. I bought it for just under $200 when green lasers were just getting affordable. I think I remember playing with it at the movie theater on opening night of Star Wars Episode I... my "lightsaber" was definitely cooler. (And no I'm not stupid enough to point it at people, the screen, etc)
I won't buy another green till non pumped green diodes hit the markets. Undecided if I want to get a blue when prices drop some more. Perhaps a PS3 violet diode.

Yea I don't own a PDA or a cell phone with a browser yet. Nor a Laptop, and I travel a lot during certain times of the year for work. SO this seemed to be a good option. Never have pursued hacking my DS ... yet. Alot of sites offfer low graphics or mobile pages so I just browse that way and everything loads pretty fast like that. Now if I could only get support .pdf and flash videos :P I'd be able to do most of the things I normally do on my winblows browsing box.
